The anti-botnet advisory center provides a web service where you can test your Internet connection for any manipulation of DNS records at the address www.dnschanger.eu
DNS is the core element of today's Internet and is responsible for ensuring that, after entering a URL in your browser, you’re redirected to the appropriate web server. This is similar to how a telephone directory service functions. Instead of a phone it’s your PC, and instead of a company name and telephone number, you’re given a domain name such as http://www.botfrei.de and an IP address.
Usually your Internet Service Provider will allocate you all necessary ip-configurations via automatic configuration (DHCP), in detail the name and ip-address of the DNS-Server, which translates queries for domain names into IP addresses for the purpose of locating computer services and devices worldwide.
However you don’t need to use the providers DNS-Server, it is possible to make changes here and set a DNS-Server of your choice. Nevertheless this involves the danger of manipulations made by criminals (see here: Operation “Ghost Klick”: FBI entlarvt DNSChanger-Botnetz). These DNS-Servers operated by cybercriminals are called Rogue-DNS and are capable to redirect you to malicious or phishing websites.
